Default God Hates Books: July

Selection time for July's book, which is a little late because I forgot. Here's a list of last month's nominations:

Song of Kali by Dan Simmons
Snow White and the Seven Samurai by Tom Holt
The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie
Jennifer Government by Max Barry
Mythago Wood by Robert Holdstock
Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift
Tai-Pan by James Clavell
Failure Is Not An Option by Gene Kranz
The Natashas: Inside the New Global Sex Trade by Victor Malarek

You have a couple of days to nominate new books before I make a poll. Here's one I'll nominate:

Lord Foul's Bane by Stephen R. Donaldson (I'm going to read this soon anyway, but I figured this would give me more motivation to )

Lord Foul's Bane it is. *decides*

Starship Troopers would've been here by now too but darn Barnes & Noble delayed my order for some reason.

I don't like the idea of Lord Foul's Bane because it's part of a series and doesn't stand alone. There are a lot of unresolved issues at the end of it. I do strongly encourage everyone to read the entirety of the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever, but I don't think it's really appropriate for GHB unless it stands alone.

Which brings me to my next suggestion: Young Bleys by Gordon R. Dickson. While it is part of a series, it stands alone quite nicely; it's more of an OAV than a proper part of the Childe Cycle anyways. Given the large amount of 'screen time' that religion gets in YB, it's also very much germane to GHF as a whole.

Why does it have to perfectly stand alone? Part of the point of a bookclub is finding new books to read. After reading the first Dexter book, I went out and got the others because I liked it; if I hadn't liked it, I wouldn't have bothered.

By the same logic, if someone really likes the first Covenant book, they can feel free to continue the series on their own; if they don't like it, they can just stop.

I already ordered the whole first trilogy. I plan to read them all. The first book by itself can still be good for discussion.

Part of the fun of books is the things you don't know at the beginning, that you learn as you go. And looking back at the end with the benefit of hindsight. The journey there is fun and it can be fun to talk about things along the way.

Darkly Dreaming Dexter stands alone. LFB does not. It leaves roughly 90% of the plot unresolved.

The first triology of Chons stands alone, though.

Yet again I ask you: so what? If people enjoy it, they'll read more on their own. If not, they won't.
