The UN council on “human rights” passed a resolution which asks nations to police and regulate free speech to prevent people from saying bad things about religion.

The resolution “urges states to take actions to prohibit the dissemination … of racist and xenophobic ideas” and material that would incite to religious hatred. It also urges states to adopt laws that would protect against hatred and discrimination stemming from religious defamation.

Freedom of speech is intimately tied to freedom of thought. Speech crimes are generally thought crimes. Suppression of free speech is a way to keep people from talking about all the other human rights being violated. Like, you know, murdering people for changing their religion, being rape victims, or being homosexual.

The resolution expresses “grave concern at the serious recent instances of deliberate stereotyping of religions, their adherents and sacred persons in the media.”

Are we living in the Middle Ages here? Are people really hurt by words? Are we going to start policing people who give others the Evil Eye too?
